When first asked to fit an SR20DET into a 1600, we carefully considered factors like safety, performance, and component availability. We designed the EHK to provide an upgraded suspension system that works seamlessly with various Nissan engine types, ensuring that your car handles well and performs under pressure.

  • Strengthened steering arms, tie rods, and cross rod – no bending or modification needed
  • Improved ground clearance and elimination of the 1600 bump steer problem
  • Allows use of shorter struts (75mm shorter than original units) with full travel capability
  • Custom-made 24mm stabilizer bar with ten adjustment settings from firm to very hard
  • Precision laser-cut mounting plates that fit the original 1600 mounting points without elongation of holes
  • Includes upgraded Whiteline bushes, ball links, and spacers for superior suspension performance
  • Exhaust clearance up to 3-1/2 inches with specially designed transmission mounting bracket
  • Fully assembled with black powder-coated finish for durability

📏 Fitment Details:

  • The kit is designed for SR20, CA18, FJ20, and L-series engines, but may require additional components like L20b sump, engine mounts, and brackets for L-series fitment
  • May require the use of later model uprights such as R30/31 S12, 910, Y31, etc.
  • Increased positive offset rims may be necessary depending on your application

📖 How the EHK Came About:

When we were first tasked with fitting an SR20DET engine into a Datsun 1600, we knew that just bolting in the engine wouldn’t be enough. Power and handling had to be matched to ensure safety and performance. We started by evaluating the core principles of suspension design and engineering a kit that addressed the key issues:

  • Safety First – A car with the power of an SR20 requires precision handling and braking to match. Our goal was to improve safety and handling with the right suspension components.
  • Cost and Availability – While developing the kit, we were mindful of the cost and the availability of parts. We wanted to ensure that the components used were both affordable and easy to source.
  • Universal Fitment – Rather than limiting the kit to just SR20 engines, we designed it to be compatible with L-series, FJ20, and CA18 engines as well. This gave it a broader appeal for a variety of builds.
  • Precise Steering & Low Ride Height – Our focus was to ensure that steering was precise and that the car maintained a low ride height without sacrificing ground clearance. Our design eliminates the bump steer problem common in lowered Datsun 1600s.
  • Innovative Suspension Design – We used a 200B front suspension design, modified to fit the 1600 chassis. By improving control arm pivot points and using longer arms, we increased the amount of negative camber for better handling.

In the end, we replaced the complete 1600 front end to create a suspension system that is stronger, more reliable, and offers better handling characteristics. Our kit allows for precise steering, increased caster, and an overall improved driving experience. And it’s all built using easily accessible Nissan components, ensuring that your build is both cost-effective and reliable.
